Our Story

Positive Mental Attitude [PMA] was founded in Deptford, South East London in November 1996. Founders are Community Residents who had established a reputable rapport with young people and adults in the local community by way of quality youth provision in leisure and educational contexts via Old Town Community Association (OTCA), during 1992 - 1995.

After much trial, change and research, founders rebirthed OTCA as Positive Mental Attitude in November of 1996, with a purpose of prioritising the provision of fundamental Education opportunities for young people and adults who are at risk of exclusion, discrimination and other social difficulties in and around London. The name "Positive Mental Attitude" represents testimonials of what users expressed to be characteristic of the founders' nature.

PMA is small and affordable, and embraces an electrifying track record of skills improvement and personal development for young people in compulsory education. As an Interdisciplinary Youth Education Sanctuary and Community College, PMA continues to provide quality education and skills development opportunities to young people and adults alike. We are Interdisciplinary in the sense that we offer two main branches of learning:

PMA Youth Education Sanctuary for 13 - 16s: offers nationally recognised GCSEs to young people at the rim of school exclusion, and for whom there are little or no opportunities to re-engage. We offer a Referral-Transfer Service & Agreement to Mainstream Schools as part of our vision and strategy to reduce the percentage of young people of African heritage (and other cultural backgrounds) who are failing or underachieving in Secondary Schools (See Schools page).

PMA Community College: offers young and mature adults the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications via accredited courses in Adult Literacy (Entry levels plus Levels 1 & 2), the Diploma in Sound & Music Technology, and many other intriguing courses.

We grow increasingly proud of our 'family' atmosphere, the 'go-the-extra-mile' dedication of our staff, and the small classes that allow for hands-on learning and personal guidance by teachers who truly care about our students' potential and ambitions.
